Why not open it up like Americna Idol?

Flutewoman I take it you have never attended a percussion audition? Somehow I don't think that hearing 50 near perfect renditions of the snare drum part to Sheherazade is going to capture the American publics' imagination. Sorry but Simon Cowell you ain't.

You really have to admire flutewoman's tenacity. No matter how many people tell her they think her idea is moronic, she keeps smiling and defending it. I think there's a position open in the Bush administration for someone like that.

I am not a Bush fan, but thank you for the compliment (?).

Alas, only 13 people have told me that this is a "moronic" idea. As compared to Bush's ratings right now. I was just testing the waters. Thank you for your feedback.

That wasn't feedback flutewoman. Everybody else bashing your idea was feedback. I just don't want you to take it lying down. You going to let them talk about your idea like that? I wouldn't.

Here's the way I see it:

Orchestra's have the reputation of being stuffy. Ticket sales, in general, are definitely not what they COULD be. I think there is definitely room in this country for more community involvement. Whether it be through them being able to listen to auditions, read about finalists through the news, --or not through auditions at all? I just think that musicians don't realize the benefit that allowing the public to come in and listen to an audition would have on the orchestra world as a whole. PEOPLE need to know who we are on that stage. And, would you really hate to know that you were in the public eye through the audition and then won it--more attention for the finalists and winner!? I just don't see why it's such a BAD thing. The screen can still be up through the first and second round and then invite the audience to VIEW the last round--but not allowed to comment.

People need to relax a little more in the orchestra world and be adapt to change. Change happens and I definitely think that more outreach in these ways are going to help the orchestra--build relationships---
etc. Create an environment. Musicians have worked hard to get where they are--even to be invited to an audition!--why not have it be out in the public?

I just don't understand the protective/shyness---we're PERFORMERS. We need to make a living. SHARE YOUR ART. DOn'T PUT SO MUCH PRESSURE ON MANAGEMENT to do everything outside of playing your instrument. PERFORM and engage your audience in every way possible. I think people just need to be more open to these sorts of ideas--and frankly--I think it's pathetic that they aren't.

Just my two cents and thanks for the encouragement, Kazoolad.

I wasn't bashing her, I was just simply disagreeing. There's a difference. It sounded like you were bashing her, if anything, or maybe I just read that as sarcasm.
