Hornist and IU Associate Professor of Music Jeff Nelsen has a new book coming out, "Fearless Auditioning," which is due for release this year. Nelsen said fearlessness is better than confidence. This concept came about for Nelsen when he was writing an article called "The Confidence Myth."

"I've never been 100 percent confident, but I can look back on performances and realize I was 100 percent fearless," Nelsen said.

"We exercise our muscles and learn our craft," Nelsen said. "On this path to excellence the moment we show our craft is usually in a performance situation like an athlete."

'Fearless' faculty hornist practices magic, discipline

Perhaps someone can contact him to perhaps participate in this discussion and talk about his book?

Hi Everyone!

The book is going well... Finishing this first draft brings with it 10 new ideas for every 5 I finish writing about. I have a good deadline, and will make it happen...I promise.

Let me know what kind of questions you might have about my "Fearlessness Tools" or anything else, and I can try to share some thoughts...and you can share thoughts my way too...

My site has a bunch of my thoughts as well.

All the best,
Jeff

Geez, that was fast Big Grin Good luck with the book Jeff.

When I think of "fearless", I think of an old girlfriend for some reason. Err, a crazy one too, like most old girlfriends. Eek Big Grin Anyhoo, she was FEARLESS when it came to concerts. In her case it sometimes didnt work to her advantage, she was too fearless. She could be totally unprepared for a concert/recital and it wouldnt phase her one bit. I admired that quality EXCEPT in the concerts where she did that, which certainly weren't all the time but enough to have me (and others) notice.

Hi Jeff,

Two questions. First, what's your Web site address and second, are you going to make your book available at a discount to myauditions members? Big Grin
