Hello,

I have been playing cello most of my life but every time I perform, I get really nervous. A friend of mind suggested that I get a prescription for Valium which I understand relaxes you but I don't really want to do that and would rather face my fears. Anyone have any suggestions to help me through this?

Wow, I didn't you could do that. I get a bit nervous when i get up in front of an audience but as the performance progresses, it is a lot easier. The key for me is to just relax, have fun and enjoy the moment.

Hi,

Yeah, well. I know a lot who use it. The get a prescription from their doctor but only if it really is extreme. I rather not use them if I can figure out how to relax before a performance.

I know that there are a lot of books out there that help with public anxiety like public speaking which I guess would be similiar to performance anxiety? Perhaps picking up one of those books and trying the exercices or advice would help. I would think that by taking Valium, it might stunt your creativity during the performance.

There are great breathing exercises that you can try to help relax you. What has your teacher said about this?
