For the composers on these forums, I thought the Human Genome Symphony might interest you.

World premiere of scientific symphony based on human genome (4/11/2005)

While scientists labored for nearly 50 years discovering the physical structure of DNA and finally completed mapping the human genome in 2000, it took only five years for a musician to compose a complete symphony based on this groundbreaking research.

Ball State University alumnus and Indianapolis native Ryan Fraley's symphony is not just influenced by the human genome — arguably the most important scientific discovery of the 21st century — most of the notes are based on actual strands of DNA.

I looked at his score and read some of his notes.

"This first step was to devise a system to convert DNA into musical pitches. A four-letter alphabet is not sufficient for each nucleotide base to represent a pitch. Conversely, the 20 amino acids are too many for each to represent a pitch. The solution lies in the fact that some amino acids are used more frequently than others. The 12 most-common amino acids were arranged in a series and each assigned a musical pitch, and the 8 least-common acids were arranged in a second, incomplete pitch series. The 4 most common acids in series one were reserved for the 4 pitches that are not accessed by the incomplete second series. (See table below). By this method, each of the 20 amino acids has similar odds of selecting one of the 12 musical pitches."

It hurts my head just to read it.

I hope the music sounds more interesting than the concept. I'm also afraid I can't generate much excitement for a composer who declares, "...there are musical palindromes too," as if (s)he had just discovered some new groundbreaking piece of information. Maybe I'm being overly judgemental, but when people say too much about music it makes me wonder why the music isn't speaking for itself. That said, I'd love to hear it and see for myself if it's any good.
