AFTER an international search the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra has appointed two in-house players to one of its top artistic posts.

Violinists Margaret Blades and Minas Berberyan will share the key position of concertmaster, equally dividing the artistic and administrative responsibilities of the role.

This could only happen down under. I don't know of any other orchestra that would do this but perhaps it is a concept whose time has come.

Hey, if not two concertmasters, how about two tubas? that would help out a lot of us tuba players who can hardly find work with an orchestra since there is ever only one of us.

I don't agree with this at all. Does that mean they split the salary so they get 2 for the price of 1?

If they don't split the salary, do they reduce the player roster to offset the cost of two concertmasters? So, now one or two players are out of work.

Tboy,

You may not agree with this but if the musicians agree and they think it is best for their orchestra, then what's the problem?

I don't think musicians in the orchestra would allow them to drop one or two players at the expense of two high paid concertmasters.
