I haven't heard anything official about Baltimore, just that not very many people were getting passed on at that audition. I don't know if they picked anyone though, which is unusual that no one's even mentioned it in here for a job like that. That just led me to believe they didn't pick anyone.

For Pittsburgh, the winner didn't get tenure (for reasons I have no idea), so the position appears to be "open" again. I'm guessing they'll have another audition, but whether that one will be open or not is anyone's guess.

I've heard rumours that LA would have an audition this past season, but they never did, so I don't know what's going on. Nothing's official until I see it in the union paper. And, with recent trends, I wouldn't be surprised if they all had private auditions.
Sorry, that's all I know!

I think the Pittsburgh position was for principal flute and the Baltimore was for assistant principal flute. I was also curious about the outcome of the Baltimore audition. But I heard that Pittsburgh had private auditions a while ago....anyone know what's going on with them.

LA is having flute auditions? What happened to their principal flutist(s). I thought they had a fairly young flute section.

I was wondering about LA too. Janet Ferguson has been co-principal there since the 80's. All of a sudden she was no longer listed on their roster. I know their second flutist and piccoloist are relatively recent additions to the section, but Anne Diener (the other principal) has been there since the early 70's.

Maybe Gloria can add something?

Janet Ferguson resigned at the end of last season for personal reasons. I don't know when the flute audition is scheduled. Watch for it in the IM. It will be advertised. I promise.

Thanks Gloria. It's a shame to hear about Ms. Ferguson though. She's a heck of a player. I hope all is well with her.

LA will have 2 flute openings; principal & assistant principal. This is a change from the co-principal model they had since the 70's. Anne Zentner retired at the end of this season. I don't think any audition has been scheduled yet. I talked with their second flutist recently and even she did not know when it was going to happen.

So the second flute moves up to principal for the coming season? It must be a dream come true!

that is interesting about the LA openings. i'm curious now how they'll even handle filling these positions. will they simply have a 2 in 1, like some smaller orchestras do? it would be more ideal for the committee members & people auditioning, but i'm not sure how bigger orchestras handle this. i've never seen a situation like this with flute in this decade at least, maybe someone has more insight.

Baltimore had an audition for 2 flute positions at once back in 2004. Assistant and 2nd. It's rare, but it happens. I'd be interested to see if LA does the same.

really? i thought they were separate auditions that just seemed to be at a very close time. i don't remember, i didn't take either one. i did send my resume to the Assistant audition ('05) & was thinking about taking it, but i thought that was separate than the 2nd. were there 2 Assistant auditions then, & 1 was combined with the 2nd? just curious

Yes, I was at the audition. The one in '05 was only for Assistant. But, the '04 one was for both. There were 6 in the finals, and they picked 2, and the "ultimate" final round was determining which position each got.

I have learned that Baltimore is sending out invites for an audition later this year.

Only those who know the Secret Password will be admitted to the Baltimore "audition".

I use that word loosely. Roll Eyes

invites as in for a "private" audition? oh well, at least another major orchestra has officially announced an audition for an opening.
