Seriously? They did the whole multi-round thing and decided nobody was right for the job? Doesn't happen often in Seattle, AFAIK.

No hire might just be a good thing in that orch! As long as the Commander is still at the podium, there will be hell to pay by everyone. A good place to avoid in my opinion!

You are correct, a good place to avoid right now from what I hear.

Despite what you read or hear, the SSO is a great place to work in many ways - a wonderful hall, a beautiful city, a reasonable wage, lots of good concerts, and some very nice colleagues. I certainly hope that we can find the right oboist the next time around.

Each time an orchestra does not fill a prominent spot, I wonder how many players think twice about not auditioning/wasting money and time for the next audition and orchestra holds for the same spot.

info spreads about situations specific and general and definitely affects whether players come to take auditions or not....i know of at least one who didn't come to a very high profile audition i just took because of the knowledge of who had been playing that position temporarily and their status in the group and in the orch that i play in now i know the reputation is spreading about our inability to hire in certain sections and affecting candidates willingness to take the audition.....orchestras don't hire repeatedly at their own peril in my opinion and when you find that good or even great players won't come anymore you've gotten what you have asked for in my opinion

I can say from experience I know many people of excellent credentials and esteem in the industry will not be taking this audition if and when it is announced again. It is ridiculous to subject candidates to any process as thorough and taxing as this specific audition had and then have the audacity to say no one is qualified. This situation is exemplary of what Elaine Douvas' article in Senza Sordino a few months back was challenging.

Or you can join your local union for the updates on opening. Also, just an FYI, most symphonies will have their open positions on their own websites. Just look under the "about" sections or under "join us". Sometimes they are listed under "employment".

Except that the IM doesn't accept Seattle's ads, since they (SSO) dropped out of the AFM back in the 80's.

Check the SSO website. Principal oboe and principal cello are advertised.

Yep, good strategy if you want to spend hours trying to find the jobs that matter. My time is more valuable which is why spending the $5 bucks on myauditions to have access to all of them from one place is a value. Jeez, if I can afford internet access, I can certainly afford $5 bucks a month!

Well, there are those that want to spend $5 a month, to save time. Fine, my comment was not intended for them. Simply for those that *know* they want to live in a certain area, or play in a certain orchestra.

As for the Seattle out of the union, that is why I put the note to go to the individual websites.

There is a free website that has all the listing of these auditions. I hesitate to share, out of politeness to this website.

The position is also posted on musical chairs ( I am prevented from posting the link, but a google search will get it).
