The musical world is a highly competitive one. There are more performers than there are open positions on about every instrument. So what separates those who get work from those who don't?

I believe part of it is obviously ability and part is connections. But I am increasingly beginning to think it is also attendance and punctuality.

Now, where am I going with this? Well, I am seeing a disturbing trend in many students now that almost seems to imply that they believe rehearsals (and sometimes even performances) are things they go to if they don't have anything better going on. This also extends to punctuality at rehearsals.

It is not uncommon for students to be 10-15 minutes late for a rehearsal, let alone having arrived early and warmed up etc.

If students aren't learning how importatnt this is while in school I can't imagine they will get it when they are trying to work.
