So long time no blog. I spent 10 days in Jordan recently performing with the Amman Symphony Orchestra. It was great to work with musicians from so many different countries (Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Russia, Israel and more!). Rehearsals were interesting also as they were held in English and Arabic! Summer for us teacher-types also means resting a little (usually). In my case it means helping to hire a new music education faculty member, writing music for the marching band next year and working on finishing my DMA thesis!

Anyone who says that teaching is easy because you get 3 months off has obviously never taught. We all know that being a musician is a year round job and so is being a music teacher. As soon as the students clear out of the building we have to start working to get ready for the next year.

We also have to practice regularly (maybe the easiest chance we have to do this with no students around) to be sure we are prepared for any performances we have the next year. I am a FIRM believer that teachers should also be performers if at all possible. It is the only way to stay in shape and current with what is going on in literature and performance. I know there are exceptions to this rule but for me my playing is an important aspect of my teaching. So I have to practice!
