So we have FINALLY moved into our new building. I cannot begin to express how great of an effect this has had on my students. They are practicing more than before and rehearsals are going better than before. Just hope that doesn't change once the "newness" wears off. We had a little upheaval in the studio between semesters but it has improved things immensly. As I have said many times before, not everyone needs to major in music and we told a couple of people that this fall on their evaluation. of course they weren't happy about it, but the question that I always ask in this situation is "If you love music so much why don't you work harder at it?" Of course we get many excuses, but the fact is that too many students now go into music for the wrong reasons. Just because you liked being in band or choir in high school doesn't mean you need to major in music. You have to LOVE music to the point that you can't imagine doing anything else. It has to be such a part of you that it is all you want to do. Too many students become music majors but then treat it as a hobby when school starts. It is a rough field and if you don't put in every ounce of effort you won't get where you want to be.
