Flying overnight to Norway--caught a video I've never seen before--the 1989 Berlin performance of Leonard Bernstein conducting Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I was absolutely entranced watching Lenny--his conducting technique--the pinnacle of his life--the sound--the earthiness of his execution--the orchestra responded with adoration. When he finished, it wasn't quite over for him--as though he was in communication with Beethoven--for his approval--wish granted, for sure. It did take him a while to acknowledge several players and soloists before he turned to the already screaming crowd. What an event this was--perhaps he was indeed the last of the great composer/performer/conductors.
It was an awesome video, and I am thrilled that it was available through Lufthansa!
