In the 1950s, we had American pianists swamping the concert halls like Kapell, Cliburn, Fleisher, Graffman, Lettvin, List etc. (I may have missed a few). It was a strong Euro-trained school of artists, playing in the old Russian style, beautiful sound, brilliant technique, etc. In a world adverse to American principles, how can we attempt to embrace our own cultural identity and our musicians (outside of the pop genre) to restore or revive an appreciation for homegrown artists on US soil? In my case, I have kept the classics alive along with new concerti composed for me as well as neglected works by great composers. But there are many other American artists. Any ideas?
